Distillation separates the components of a liquid mixture by exploiting differences in their boiling points. The mixture is heated so the lower-boiling component vaporises first; that vapour is then cooled in a condenser and collected separately from the material left behind.

It is one of the oldest and most widely used separation methods in chemical manufacturing, and it does two jobs. Purification removes unwanted components from a product - unreacted starting materials, by-products, residual solvent. Recovery reclaims solvent from a process stream so it can be reused rather than disposed of, which reduces both raw material and waste costs.

Simple distillation works where boiling points differ substantially. Where they are close, fractional distillation is needed, using a column that allows repeated cycles of vaporisation and condensation to achieve better separation. Vacuum distillation lowers the pressure so materials boil at lower temperatures, which is essential for anything that would degrade if heated to its normal boiling point.

Distillation capability requires a heat source, condensing capacity and, for vacuum work, a vacuum system - so it is worth confirming directly rather than assuming. Solvent recovery also brings emissions considerations under environmental permitting.

If purity or solvent recovery matters to your product, ask whether the site has fractional or vacuum capability rather than simple distillation alone. The three are quite different in what they can achieve, and the terms are sometimes used loosely. Where a product is heat-sensitive, raise that at the outset: it usually points to vacuum distillation, and not every site that offers distillation has vacuum capability available at production scale.
