Custom synthesis is the manufacture of a specific chemical compound to a customer's specification, produced through chemical reaction rather than by blending existing materials. It is used where the substance needed isn't available commercially, or where a customer wants a proprietary molecule made without disclosing it more widely.

It differs from formulation work in a fundamental way: the output is a new substance that did not exist before the process ran. That brings requirements a blending operation doesn't have - reaction vessels rated for the temperatures and pressures involved, reliable thermal control, containment, and staff experienced in managing reactions that can run away if mishandled. See exothermic reaction for why that last point matters.

Custom synthesis is often multi-step, meaning the target molecule is reached through a sequence of reactions with intermediates isolated or carried forward at each stage. Each additional step adds cost, time and yield loss, which is why route selection is itself a significant piece of work and why manufacturers with strong process chemistry capability are valued for it.

Relatively few UK contract manufacturers offer genuine synthesis capability compared with the number offering blending, so it narrows a search considerably. See custom chemical synthesis for what to look for.

When approaching a manufacturer about synthesis work, expect the conversation to start with the route rather than the price. A manufacturer who proposes an alternative route to the same molecule is usually adding value rather than complicating things, since route choice drives cost, yield and safety more than negotiation ever will.
