Briar Chemicals Limited

The Grangemouth site dates back to 1919, when it was established as Scottish Dyes Ltd, later passing through ICI, Zeneca, Avecia and KemFine ownership before Munich-based investment group Aurelius AG acquired it in 2010 and renamed it CalaChem in 2011. For a decade the business operated as a contract and toll manufacturer of agrochemical actives, pharmaceutical intermediates and speciality fine chemicals, running three principal plants with more than 20 multi-purpose reactor trains.
In September 2021 CalaChem ended chemical manufacturing at the site, with around 95 jobs lost following the loss of a major contract and increased overseas competition. It has since been repositioned as an 85-acre serviced industrial estate within the Forth Green Freeport, offering plots, laboratory and office space, utilities such as power, steam, nitrogen and compressed air, and effluent and waste treatment to chemical, pharmaceutical and bio-manufacturing tenants.
